Title Design Techniques for Engine Manifolds, Wave Action Methods for IC Engines
Author D E Winterborne and R J Pearson
Biblio 1999; 392 Pages; Hard Cover
Description It has been said that if the cylinder is the heart of the engine, then the manifolds are the lungs. The design of manifolds for internal combustion engines has, therefore, been an important application of unsteady fluid dynamics for many years. Different engine applications require different characteristics, and these can be achieved through the detailed design of manifold. This design is dependent upon being able to calculate the unsteady flow of the compressible gases flowing through the engine. This book, together with its companion volume, Theory of Engine Manifold Design - Wave Action Methods for IC Engines, reports upon the significance developments that have occurred over the last twenty years and shows how mature the calculation of one-dimensional flow has become. In particular, the volumes show how many of the limitations of the method of characteristics can be removed by the application of finite volume techniques, resulting in more rapid and more robust calculations. Key Features: Covers a broad range of engines * Discusses intake and exhaust manifold design and measurement of component characteristics * Develops the fundamental equations of compressible flow and introduces modern solution algorithms for that flow * Describes fundamental characteristics of silencers, and gives many examples of the silencer design * Discusses future solution techniques, and introduces multi-dimensional methods for unsteady flow.
