Title Direct Injection Gasoline Engines
Author
Biblio 2001; 165 Pages; Soft Cover
Description Over the past fifty years, direct-injection has been considered one of the most promising approaches for improving the efficiency and performance of the spark-ignition engine. Spurred by the need for increased fuel economy and reduced carbon dioxide emissions, research and development has intensified in the last ten years, leading to commercial introduction of a number of direction-ignition, spark-ignited (DISI) gasoline engines. Despite successful commercial production, however, DISI technology still offers considerable untapped potential and significant emission challenges. The long-term viability of DISI engines is dependent on advancing our understanding of DISI issues such as fuel injector performance, fuel-air mixture preparation, combustion, and emission formation. Contents include: Fuel Distribution and Combustion Characteristics in a Direct-Injection, Spark-Ignited (DISI) Engine Under Stratified Operation; Liquid Fuel Impingement on the Piston Bowl of a Direct-Injection, Spark-Ignited (DISI) Engine Under Stratified Operation; Investigations of Mixture Formation and Combustion in Gasoline Direct Injection Engines; Optical Diagnostics and CFD-Simulations to Support the Combustion Process Development of the Volkswagen FSI, Direct-Injection Gasoline Engine; Flame Structure Visualization of Stratified Combustion in a DISI Engine via PLIF; Fuel Volatility Effects on Mixture Preparation and Performance in a GDI Engine During Cold Start; Modeling of DISI Engine Sprays with Comparison to Experimental In-Cylinder Spray Images; Numerical Prediction and Validation of Fuel Spray Behavior in a Gasoline Direct-Injection Engine; 3-D PIV Analysis of Structural Behavior of D.I. Gasoline Spray; Investigation of Augmented Mixing Effects on Direct-Injection Stratified Combustion; Characterization of DISI Emissions and Fuel Economy in Homogeneous and Stratified Charge Modes of Operation; DISI Engine Spark and Fuel Injection Timings, Effects, Compromise and Robustness.
